Like many other Filipinos, we share the concern regarding the online report by the Jakarta Times that quoted Indonesian President Joko Widodo saying that President Duterte “gave the go ahead” for the execution of Mary Jane Veloso.
We trust that the Administration will immediately shed light on this report to address the understandable concern of so many of us Filipinos.
A year ago, the Filipino nation came together in prayer and unity to appeal to the Indonesian government to spare Mary Jane’s life. Our prayers were answered when she was given a reprieve, and as one nation, we rejoiced.
In this light, the report comes as a terrible shock, and we hope the government can issue the necessary clarification and take the appropriate action.
Mary Jane’s case is emblematic of the hardships faced by millions of our OFWs. We must keep her welfare in mind, along with the welfare of all OFWs, as they remain under our government’s protection and support despite working overseas.
