    VP Leni: PET decision on recount a test of PH electoral process, justice system

    MANILA — Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday said that the impending decision of the Supreme Court regarding the electoral protest filed by defeated candidate Bongbong Marcos will be a test of the country’s electoral process and justice system.

    In an interview, VP Leni said that a lot is at stake in the vote expected from the Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), as it will impact the credibility of the 2016 elections, from which a number of incumbent national officials, including the President, owe their mandate. This comes after the completion of the initial recount in the three pilot provinces chosen by Marcos himself, namely Camarines Sur, Negros Oriental, and Iloilo.

    “Hindi lang ito laban naming dalawa, pero test din ito ng entire electoral process, test ito ng justice system,” she told reporters. “Ang pinaka-issue dito is bigger than both of us, so ganoon siya kahalaga.”

    “Kailangan tayong magtiwala, kasi ito iyong electoral process na nagpanalo sa amin ni Presidente. Ito iyong electoral process na nagpanalo sa mga nakaupo na mga officials ngayon. So kapag hindi natin tiniwalaan iyong electoral proess, parang sinasabi natin na iyong lahat na nakaupo ngayon, huwad. Kaya iyong sa atin naman, parati tayong para sa strengthening ng institutions, para sa trust in the judicial system, para sa daan patungo sa demokrasya,” she also said.

    Amid persistent rumors and fake news claiming a victory for Marcos, Robredo says she keeps faith that a “favorable decision” will emerge, given that projections from the initial recount show that her lead even increased, compared to Marcos’ votes.

    Contrary to claims being made by the Marcos camp and her detractors, VP Leni underscored that she is looking forward to a speedy resolution of the case.

    “We are hoping for the best,” she said. “Matagal na din naming ninais na matapos na ito, kasi gaya ng sinabi ko in the past, hanggang kasi nandiyan pa siya, nagkakaroon lang ng platform para mag-propaganda, na kadalasan fake news iyong mga lumalabas. So sana matapos na.”
