OVP, Angat Buhay Partners to Build Village for Families Displaced by Marawi Siege
Donations from ‘Piso Para sa Laban ni Leni’ campaign to fund project
The Office of the Vice President and partners under its Angat Buhay program are set to build a transitional village for families displaced by the Marawi siege.
Vice President Leni Robredo will return to Marawi on Tuesday for the groundbreaking of the Angat Buhay Village in Barangay Sagonsongan, where 60 transitionary shelters are expected to be completed by June this year.
This is part of the OVP’s early recovery interventions for the city, following the months-long clashes that forced thousands of families away from their homes.
The project will be implemented in partnership with Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) and the City Government of Marawi. It will include provisions for livelihood, electricity, and water, as well as temporary learning spaces and toy library for the children. XU will oversee the construction of the houses as well as the social preparation for the identified beneficiaries.
The construction of the 60 transitory shelters is funded by “Piso Para sa Laban ni Leni,” a donation drive that raised some P7.4 million, initially intended to pay the remaining half of the required cash deposit in the electoral protest pending before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.
The project is also made possible with assistance from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao government; United Architects of the Philippines – Quezon City Elliptical Chapter; Metro Stonerich Corporation; RAF International Forwarding Services, Inc.; Latter-Day Saints Charities; Sigma Delta Phi-Southern California Alumnae Association; JS Unitrade; Philippine Toy Library; Solanaland; and Vice Squad, a group of VP Leni’s college batchmates.
The OVP and its Angat Buhay partners have extended some P11.53 million worth of resources for those displaced by the siege, including relief assistance, livelihood provisions, community kitchens, water filters, medicines, and hygiene kits, and school supplies.
