VP Leni: Duterte’s RevGov threat ‘irresponsible,’ against oath to protect Constitution

BOHOL — Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday said it was irresponsible for President Rodrigo Duterte to threaten to declare a revolutionary government, in response to calls for caution over his pronouncements and orders.

VP Leni said Duterte’s remarks, made Thursday night, was “surprising” given that he is a lawyer, and should be well-versed about his duties under the Constitution—which he swore to protect as President.

Kapag nagdeklara siya ng revolutionary government, ang gusto ba nitong sabihin, inaabandona niya iyong kaniyang pinanumpaan,” she told reporters in Bohol, following the launch of the Ahon Laylayan Koalisyon.

Robredo underscored that the gravity of holding public office calls for officials to be prudent with their pronouncements, and not to resort to tantrums, in the face of criticisms. She raised concern, in particular, over the President warning that his critics would be jailed and tagged as “rebels,” “criminals,” or “drug suspects.”
